Two of the most common gingival (gum) disease seen in patients around the world are Gingivitis and Periodontitis. The former is a condition characterized primarily by redness, swelling and occasional bleeding of the gums. Patients may also notice the formation of small pockets between their teeth. This usually happens when patients begin to neglect their oral hygiene, allowing plaque to accumulate along the gum line. Periodontitis on the other hand is a very advanced stage of Gingivitis, when the latter is left untreated. The symptoms of this infection include severe bleeding of the gums accompanied by pain and inflammation, deeper gingival pockets, foul mouth odour, recession of the gum and exposure of tooth roots, mobility of multiple teeth in the affected region, and eventually the falling out of the teeth.

In most cases, gum diseases can be prevented if patients follow a strict oral hygiene routine at home, and visit the clinic for regular check-ups and cleaning appointments. In-office scaling at least twice a year can keep most gingival conditions at bay – if you haven’t have your professional cleaning done in a while, book your appointment with the teat at Victoria Dental today!
